Tricks for Coping with Panic Attacks

For individuals suffering from phobias and anxiety disorders, fear and phobias often rule their lives. The person eventually may become so fearful of the outside world, he may even retreat to the safety of his home because it is the only safe haven for him. The good news is, there is hope, because learning the tricks of the trade for coping with panic attacks are simple, forthright and highly effective. There are the basic three, along with other methods of combating the disorder.

The first trick toward coping with panic attacks is learning how to breathe. Bringing in enough air to expand the stomach and chest assists the person to calm down. How this exercise is performed is by inhaling deeply and slowly through the nose while simultaneously pushing the stomach outward. Now exhale through the mouth while pulling the stomach inward. This is a great relaxation exercise.

The second trick to coping with panic attacks is to either take short walks on a treadmill or outdoors, dance to fast beat music, and go for a swim. These activities increase endorphins that allow a person to feel contentment. All of these exercises may be done in front of the television if there is a fear of going outdoors. Jogging is a great exercise that improves the body and the mind.

The third trick to coping with panic attacks is to do away with negative self talk and begin anew by speaking positively to oneself. When in a fearful situation, speaking words which convey there is no danger, nothing to fear, and no need to flee, and you can do this, are great skills to possess. After lots of practice, each episode of panic will become less and less. If one is coming on, using the self talk will dispel it quickly before it escalates into a full blown panic attack. Other methods of treating a panic disorder is with medication if warranted, reducing the use of caffeine, and accept the fact that yes some things really are scary, but they can be overcome. The combination of the training above will equip the individual with all the armor he needs to return to a full and productive life. Go back to the Anxiety Treatment page.
